How to submit your website to Google

Congratulations! You’ve published your website. If you are building your website with Yola, we will automatically send it to the search engines to be reviewed after you publish. Once reviewed, ideally, the search engines will index your website for specific keywords. If you’d like to speed up this process, we’ve got a few tips for you here in this article.

Google Webmaster Tools is a program that you can use to help with your website indexing. Once you’ve signed up for an account, you can submit your website and sitemap for review. Note that Google uses the following disclaimer:

“We don’t add all submitted URLs to our index, and we can’t make predictions or guarantees about when or if submitted URLs will appear in our index.”

What this means is that not all websites are created equal. Google matches keywords to your content, and your website will also be competing with others to match for those keywords. For this reason, keywords are a big deal, especially for small businesses.

Don’t worry, there’s still plenty you can do to ensure your site is ranked.

You’ll need the URL of your website. If you plan to buy a custom domain for your website, now would be the perfect time, especially since Google does have a slight preference for these.

Enter your website URL into Google Webmaster Tools. You will then need to verify that you own the website that you’ve added. You will need to copy the code given under “Alternative methods” and “HTML tag.”

You will then need to add the code in the Google Webmasters widget within the “Site” tab in Sitebuilder. Once you’ve added the code, you will need to Save and Publish your website.

Next Click “Verify” in your Google Webmaster Tools account. For more detailed instructions on this process, review our tutorial.

The last and final step is to submit your sitemap. Your website’s sitemap will be your web address (e.g. yola.com) plus /sitemap.xml. So the full URL will look like: http://mywebsite.com/sitemap.xml. Then go to “Sitemaps” within your Google Webmaster Tools “Site Dashboard.” Add this URL to the “Add/Test Sitemap” section, click submit and voila! Your sitemap has been submitted.

Once Google reviews your site, you can see helpful information within this dashboard that will allow you to further optimize your website.
