Still many of us get scared when staring at a blank page. Questions like: “What should I say?” and “How do I get started?” often arise, especially when you build your website. Here are a few tips to help you get started writing your website.

Read.
The best way to get started is to read and read everything. Look at competitor websites, look at other people’s resume websites and read interesting articles that are related to what you want to talk about. And if that doesn’t work, read poetry.

Analyze why you liked what you read. What made it sing to you? Would you read it again?

This can also be an ongoing process. Sign up for things you like and keep reading. Then incorporate it into your own writing style and voice.

Write your life story.
If you’re at a loss for what to write, start from the beginning. Write your life story. Then you can begin to incorporate it into your business content or your resume website (if that’s what you’re writing). Is there a specific event that happened that made you want to build your website? Was it a gradual process?

Businesses that have a human element or personality to the website often have a greater success rate. This is part of business branding and putting a face to the products and services you sell. People historically relate to others better than they do to objects. If they see you as a thinking, feeling entity, chances are they’ll be able to connect with you and your business on a higher emotional level.

Include other people.
You might be thinking, “Wait a second. I thought we’re writing about ourselves here?” Yes, we are, but even though you are writing about yourself, there will be other people involved in your story. It’s just a plain fact.

We live in a world with people and interact with others constantly. Even the lone wolf has supporting actors. Making it to the top alone is too difficult. Build community and include the people that influenced you and helped you succeed. It also helps to shape that story, making it more relatable and fun.

Edit and optimize
Once you’ve got your story written, you can work on editing and optimizing. Add in your keywords and ask friends and peers to read it. Call this your About page and repeat for all other pages using your newfound voice as the foundation for your online voice.

Copywriting can can be a difficult feat, especially when you find yourself staring at a blank screen.
