{"id":2635,"date":"2011-06-14T15:47:16","date_gmt":"2011-06-14T22:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yola.com\/blog\/?p=2635"},"modified":"2013-02-19T03:14:24","modified_gmt":"2013-02-19T10:14:24","slug":"seventh-graders-ace-their-yola-assignment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yola.com\/blog\/seventh-graders-ace-their-yola-assignment\/","title":{"rendered":"Seventh-Graders Ace Their Yola Assignment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"Classical Magnet Class Shot\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5270\/5834360648_078a843ef2.jpg\" alt=\"Classical Magnet Class Shot\" width=\"430\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in March, math teacher James Hochdorfer gave his 7th-grade algebra class at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicalmagnet.org\/\">Classical Magnet School<\/a> in Connecticut an unusual assignment.<\/p>\n<p>He asked the 12- and 13-year-olds to make their own websites with <a href=\"..\/..\/\">Yola.com<\/a>, to show they understood the math concepts they\u2019d been learning all year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey started to panic,\u201d explains James, who\u2019s been teaching for seven years.  \u201cThey wondered how they\u2019d be able to do it all in just a month,\u201d he  says. \u201cThen they quickly saw how easy it was to work with Yola to make a  really awesome website.\u201d The kids didn\u2019t have any special technical  skills to start with, worked on PCs, and finished their Yola sites in  just four weeks of class time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/classicalmagnet.yolasite.com\/\">It looks like James\u2019s kids had a ton of fun building their sites<\/a>, from <a href=\"http:\/\/solvesystemsofequations.yolasite.com\/\">choosing templates<\/a> to using tools like our HTML, text, and picture widgets. We especially love <a href=\"http:\/\/percentageandproportions.yolasite.com\/\">the animations<\/a> on some of their pages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Solving Multi-Step Equations by YolaSites, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/yola_sites\/5833751349\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2518\/5833751349_9219394054.jpg\" alt=\"Solving Multi-Step Equations\" width=\"500\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey  really got a kick out of the voki and animate widgets. But overall,  they were most impressed with the embedding feature,\u201d says James.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Educators Design Lesson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/yabber\/5834360606\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3618\/5834360606_b85466e7d0.jpg\" alt=\"MFP3\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>James has a few recommendations to start your own class site-building project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, give <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usask.ca\/education\/coursework\/skaalid\/theory\/cgdt\/designtheory.htm\">a lesson on design<\/a> and making the site look good (space, balance, simplicity, consistency, no clip-art craziness)<\/li>\n<li>Introduce the Yola site builder and go through it with them<\/li>\n<li>Focus on learning one aspect of the site builder at a time, then practice it<\/li>\n<li>About halfway through the process, touch base and give critiques<\/li>\n<li>Have them do peer editing as they progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We  think this was a brilliant assignment for middle-school students. \u201cThe  motto of our school is \u2018We learn not for school, but for life,\u2019\u201d\u00a0says  James. \u201cI believe the kids learned skills in communicating, writing,  problem solving, and a little bit of programming, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/classicalmagnet.yolasite.com\/\">Take a look at their sites<\/a>, enjoy, and get inspired.
