About the Name Change
Q: Why the name Yola?
A: Yola exemplifies the creativity and excitement that people bring to their websites. The name comes from the Hindi word "jhola," which has several meanings, one of which is "hatch." Yola is where you hatch your big ideas on the web.
Q: Why are you changing your name?
A: After hearing feedback from our users that "SynthaSite" is a bit of a challenge to say, spell and remember, we wanted to stay true to our belief in making things easy. After all, we're still about website building for everyone. Yola is also a heck of a lot easier to spell.
Q: What's changing?
A: Our name. Our URL. The look and feel of our website. And even though our new web address is www.yola.com, you’ll still reach us if you type in www.synthasite.com. We’ll redirect you over to our new site.
Q: What's not changing?
A: Everything else. Your login is the same, the web address for your published site is the same and the site builder is the same. We still offer all the great website building tools and hosting you're used to, and it's still free.
Q: If I have a SynthaSite account, do I need a new account with Yola?
A: No. Everything about your account stays the same.
Q: If I have a SynthaSite account, will I lose my site?
A: Absolutely not.
Q: Is this a permanent name change?
A: This is permanent and we’re really excited about our new name.
About my Existing SynthaSite Subdomains
Q: Will my SynthaSite subdomain (example: mysite.synthasite.com) still work? For how long?
A: Yes, it will always work.
Q: Can I still publish new sites to a SynthaSite subdomain?
A: No. You can update existing sites to their SynthaSite subdomains, but all new sites will be published to a Yolasite subdomain.
About Yolasite Subdomains
Q: Do I need to change to a yolasite subdomain or can I keep my current site on synthasite.com?
A: You can keep your site on synthasite.com as long as you like.
Q: If I change to a yolasite subdomain, will you redirect traffic (also called a 301 redirect) coming from my old SynthaSite subdomain to my new yolasite subdomain?
A: Yes. External links and anyone who manually types in your old web address with .synthasite.com will be redirected to your new web address with yolasite.com.
Q: Why don't you offer a subdomain with yola.com?
A: There are 2 reasons we only offer subdomains with yolasite.com instead of yola.com.
- To improve network security, the domain yola.com, will be used strictly for our systems that power official yola.com websites.
- To make it more difficult for fraudsters to create phishing sites with our tools, we need to separate our domain name from those available to our users.
A: There are 2 easy ways to switch:
- Go to the MySites page. Next to each eligible site, you'll find a message that invites you to “Update your subdomain to yolasite.com”. You can keep the suggested name, which is your current synthasite.com site name or enter a new one. Then confirm by choosing Change Now.
- Go to the Sitebuilder. Near the top of the page, click the arrow next to Update My Sites and select Publishing Settings. Choose Change Subdomain and follow the steps from there.
A: Yes, you certainly can. But if you want the same name, act soon as we are holding the site name that you use on synthasite.com until May 31. After May 31, all reserved names will be released for anyone to use. It may still be possible to get the same name, as long as no one else chooses it.
You do not need to keep your synthasite.com site name, if you want to switch to a yolasite subdomain. You have the option to choose a different name, but it will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
NOTE: If you opt for a site name different than the one you had with synthasite.com, this reserved name will automatically become available to any Yola user.
Q: Should I move my existing site with a SynthaSite subdomain to a yolasite subdomain?
A: That depends. Probably no, if:
- You have a large user base that knows mysite.synthasite.com and they would be confused if you changed to a different address.
- Your site already ranks well with the search engines
- You have business cards or other printed material with your site mysite.synthasite.com and you do not want to reprint it.
- You love the new yolasite name
- You can find a better name on yolasite.com than your current synthasite.com one
You are not yet indexed or ranked by the search engines
A: On Yola, whenever you change subdomains, all content on your site stays the same – there's nothing you need to do with your site. However, if you are using any domain-specific tools, like Google Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics, you will need to update the settings with your new web address.
About the Company
Q: Were you acquired?
A: No. We’re the same company. Same ownership, management and employees as before. The only thing that’s changed is our name.
Q: Are you shifting the direction of your business?
A: No. We’ve always been focused on helping small businesses and individuals easily create professional-looking websites, and nothing about that is changing. Our new Yola name helps us better communicate this message to folks who aren’t using us yet.
Q: How does Yola make money?
A: We earn revenue by selling value added services such as domain names, premium styles and the Yola link removal.
Q: Is this related to your recent funding announcement?
A: No, the timing between the two is purely a coincidence. That being said, we're very excited to have the funding to build Yola into the best choice for building great-looking websites.
Q: Who do I contact if I have any other questions about the Yola name change?
A: Email us at support@yola.com and we'll do our best to answer any questions you might have. If you send your email to support@synthasite.com, we’ll forward it on.
